I hand build all of my pieces with low fire raku clay - cone 06. After the
pieces are bisque fired, I glaze them with raku glazes - cone 06 - then I
put them in a raku kiln outside - a 55 gallon drum - & fire them to approx.
1800 degrees. I pull them out at this temperature and put each one in a
trash can full of newspaper. The lid is then put on tight and the waiting
begins - 30 minutes. Off goes the lid and you hope for lots of great
colors. Life's a mystery - you never know what you are going to get! The
places on the piece that are black is where there is no glaze and the smoke
turns the clay black. |
