ARTIST  STATEMENT Return T0 TOP

I have a need to express my creativity. The most satisfying outlet for this has proven to be my ceramic work. I am drawn towards sculpture because of its ability to be thought-provoking. It is a way of expressing my views both politically and aesthetically. Building a unique piece appeals to my sense of value. I feel more comfortable communicating to the public through an inanimate object.

The added elements:-

THOUGHT PROVOKING: As a Daughter, Sister, Mother and Spouse, many of the ‘Current events’ that take place in our "Civilized world" I find worthy of more or perhaps different attention. An ‘image’ can often be remembered for ever.

HUMOR: While hoping to stimulate the viewer most pieces are meant to invoke humor.

TEXTURE: Texture plays a huge part in shaping the clay and is drawn from many influences in nature and from objects around us.

COLOUR: Colour stems from an upbringing in the Far East where the light is dazzling and the colours are vibrant, compared to the greys of England where I was educated.

FINISH: Finish is everything. I believe a piece should be finished to the best of one’s ability. I would rather take longer over one piece than produce many pieces of a lesser quality.

UNIQUE SCULPTURES: I only make unique original sculptures . I like the idea that each collector has a piece that no one else has. Sculptures may follow a theme but no two are ever the same.

Return T0 TOP RESUME

Origins:

Born in Hong Kong of English parents. Studied in England age 11 to 18. Studied in Taiwan age 22 to 25. Lived and worked in England, France, Hong Kong and U.S.A

Influences:

Asia and the Chinese culture have left an indelible impression on me, and are places I visit for inspiration. As a Chinese speaker and born of the Orient this is my spiritual home. England has been a cultural home. The social fabric, historical wealth and humor are traits that are ingrained in me. The English experience provides an abundance of ideas. America [U.S.A.] has been my home since 1993 and has hosted my most ambitious art works to date.

Photography

At the age of thirteen I started taking photographs of the facinating life, nature, colour, and architecture around me. These images later reappeared in my work with clay, in texture, ideas and colour.
