ARTIST BACKGROUND |
A native of West Virginia, Jeanne has been captivated by visual arts in various mediums since grade school. She left West Virginia at the age of 17 to study at Pratt Institute of Art in Brooklyn, NY where she obtained a bachelor of Industrial Design degree. After graduation additional studies in New York included silver jewelry fabrication, sculpture with Seymour Lipton, figure drawing at the Art Student's League, weaving & watercolor painting.Top
She worked for George Nelson Industrial Design on the American Exhibition in Moscow coordinating the photographic pavilion, doing graphic design & model making. That job was followed by 12 months travel throughout Europe & study in Paris. Upon returning to New York Jeanne decided to change fields & work for the next 20 years as a corporate interior designer & consultant. She collaborated closely with architects on spatial concepts & her work has been recognized in the New York Times & Occulus, a NY architecture publication.
After several summer vacations exploring the Southwest Jeanne and her husband decided to relocate to Taos, New Mexico in the fall of 1995. Work with metal began a year later when she was drawn to the traditional art of northern New Mexican tin work. Jeanne is entirely self taught as a tin artist & her diversified art background has been useful - a strong architectural eye is apparent in her work.
Jeanne's award winning tin work has been shown in the Santa Fe Museum of Fine Arts, "Taos Invites Taos", The Craft Alliance in St. Louis, MO & at the "Sculpture & Objects of Functional Art" show in Chicago, IL. Her work is in private collections across the US, Europe & Japan.

ARTIST STATEMENT |
Transforming sheet metal into three dimensions is fascinating to me. My nature leads me to create pieces that are functional as well as pleasant to behold. I'm drawn to the shimmer & tactile quality of metal combined with the reflective quality of glass & a logical combination of this is the mirror which constitutes a major portion of my work to date. Metal being both rigid & malleable combined with glass presents a challenge in construction & finish. Dimension is achieved by wrapping, folding, soldering additional elements & adding surface texture. I've also begun experimenting with color and glass beadwork added to the metal.Top
